Docteur Fish —a subdivision of aquarium and aquatic-supply manufacturer Aqualogue—has partnered with four local spas to soften and sanitize feet with natural fish-exfoliation treatments. Administered without products or abrasion, this treatment—also known as ichthyotherapy—is performed by small Turkish fish called garra rufa. Since the beginning of the 19th century, they have been used to relieve the symptoms of some skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis.

The 25-minute fish pedicure takes place under the supervision of technicians, within individual or double-sized aquariums whose water is filtered and sterilized seven times every hour by UV sterilizers. Feet are washed with warm water before soaking in the basin, where garra rufa remove any dead skin with a delicate suction motion. The sensation is totally painless and clients often experience a feeling of relaxation. Blood circulation is improved and skin is covered in dithranol, an enzyme produced by the fish that slows cell growth of psoriasis plaques. Treated feet emerge healthy, soft, and shiny. Though today’s deal does not include polishing, clients may complement their treatment with a colourful coat of polish from the spa’s vast selection.
