Today’s Groupon: for $7, you get $15 worth of savoury pies and desserts at Tourtière Australienne on Avenue du Parc (corner of Mont Royal).
At Tourtière Australienne, New Zealander chef Don Hudson introduces native-born confections to new tast- bud terrain. Don’s hand-fashioned meat pies gently swaddle fresh fillings in a flaky butter puff pastry before lulling them to sleep with stories about famous pie fights. Test-drive a piping hot individual portion of steak, bacon, and cheese pie ($5), then treat future dinner companions or freezer-dwelling penguins to a frozen curried-vegetable and sweet-potato pie ($16). Dessert seekers can also gratify a neglected sweet tooth with sugar-laced delicacies, such as the Australian lamington, a white cake renowned for its elegant swan dives in sweet chocolate icing followed by graceful tumbles through shaved coconut ($2–$2.50). The pavlova, meanwhile, buoys up bellies with a light, fluffy meringue cake garnished with cream and fruit ($3.50). Though not included in this deal, culinary explorers can also peruse a variety of imported Australian grocery wares, such as Australian chocolate, biscuits, and all-powerful Vegemite.
Tourtière Australienne has been featured by the Hour, the Montreal Mirror, and Tourisme Montreal. Five Yelpers give it a perfect five-star average.
